PD Dr. Antje Nötzold is a renowned expert on the geopolitics of space as well as on the strategic developments and arms control in space at the Technische Universität Chemnitz and Universität der Bundeswehr München. We are excited that Dr. Nötzold will be visiting us on the premises to exchange with the CRC 1667 ATLAS on the geostrategic implications of Very Low Earth Orbit satellite operations and to give a special lecture on Space as Battleground - Geopolitics of Outer Space Security.
The lecture examines the extent to which and how conflicts are already being fought in space and whether warfare will also take place in space in the future. Based on the strategic economic and military significance of space, it outlines the developments and framework conditions that shape the use of space and identifies the changes and trends that have taken place over the last decade. The focus will then shift to the question of possible militarisation and warfare in space. The lecture will show how the new rivalry between the USA and China is transferring to space. What lies behind the Second Space Race, what conflicts have the potential to escalate, what vulnerabilities exist in space, that an arms race on counterspace capabilities is already in full swing, how the military significance of space capabilities is changing, what insights and changes have emerged from the Russian war in Ukraine, and what warfare through and, in future, in space looks like. Finally, it will examine how Europe and Germany are responding to this development and whether their security and defence policies sufficiently incorporate space policy.
This special guest presentation is open to all and is co-hosted by the ATLAS Academy in cooperation with the Zukunftsoffensive Luft- und Raumfahrt Nachwuchs BW of Faculty of Aerospace Engineering and Geodesy (Fac. 6) as part of the new lecture event series The Aerospace Talks.
