Drones and artificial intelligence are now an integral part of the news: from error-prone language models to drone sightings that disrupt European air traffic. This becomes particularly relevant where both technologies interact, such as in agriculture, logistics, or military conflicts. The lecture examines the interaction between AI and drones (swarms) from a political science perspective. After an introduction to the technical basics of drones, swarm technologies, and AI, the focus will be on three politically particularly relevant dimensions: the ethical and legal debate on responsibility and control, military and strategic use in current and future conflicts, and economic significance in the context of dual use, innovation, and regulation. The lecture shows that AI-based drone swarms pose challenges that go far beyond purely technical issues and touch on central topics of security policy and social responsibility.
Tim Robin Kosack is a political scientist and research associate at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in the Institute for AI Safety and Reliability, where he conducts research on the ethical, legal, and social aspects (ELSA) of artificial intelligence. He studied political science at TU Dresden and law and artificial intelligence at the Università degli Studi di Torino. His research focuses on the intersection of AI, responsibility, regulation, and international security policy.
