The lecture presents air traffic control at LFV in Sweden with practical examples of working procedures, automation tools and incident statistics. The opening of the first remote tower in 2015 and the safety assessment for operational approval are highlighted. Subsequently, research efforts to increase the existing level of automation in ATC with the help of AI are presented. Voice recognition in automatic flight information services illustrate the challenges that need to be overcome. Accents, workload, and local dialects challenge recognition accuracy, which must be on par with that of human operators. Lothar Meyer provides a view into the future with strategies at LFV for further development of the safety assessment aiming for certification.

LFV is a state-owned public enterprise with a mission in Air Traffic Control for both civil and military aviation, as well as related services. It is providing Air Traffic Management and Air Navigation Services at several locations across Sweden. The Air Traffic Controllers manage approximately 2,000 aircraft in Swedish airspace every day. LFV was the first in the world to introduce Remote Air Traffic Services, and they are driving digitalisation in several areas. They are involved in the development of European airspace through cooperation in organisations and alliances.

Guests are cordially invited  - we look forward to your participation and a lively exchange!
