Mars is considered one of the most promising candidates in the search for life beyond Earth: ESA and NASA spacecraft are currently studying its surface and atmosphere, and a crewed mission is expected within the next twenty to thirty years. But how close are we really to exploring the Red Planet and what does it take to get humans there safely? Gernot Grömer offers insights into the research that is bringing us closer to this goal, step by step.
Dr. Gernot Grömer is Director of the Austrian Space Forum, an analog astronaut, and a leading expert in space exploration and astrobiology. He holds a PhD in exploration astrobiology from the University of Innsbruck and has taught astronautics and planetology for more than 20 years at several European universities. He has led numerous international Mars analog missions in locations such as Oman, Israel, and Armenia, and currently heads the AMADEE Mars simulation program while contributing to projects for the European Space Agency and the European Union. Since 2018, he has also hosted Terra Mater Wissen, Austria’s most-watched science TV program.
